“I haven’t lost that. It’s still there,” Byrne said during a phone interview from a stop in Denver, Colo. But he has new material that’s “a bit heavier, there’s a little more weight to it. Something to be proud of — I’m not ashamed to do any of the jokes in front of my parents.” Byrne will be looking at identity for his next Comedy Central special, “The Byrne Identity,” to run late spring, early summer. “Three chapters on how you can identify people through race, through music and through the sexes.

It’s a little more mature, I’d say,” he said. He’s doing something that needs more bravery than miming sex acts onstage — looking into his own identity. The problem with his older material was, “it’s just observational humor, there was nothing about me in it.” Now he’s looking at “how I see myself and Americans, really. Being someone of mixed race, I never made jokes about just being Asian.” Byrne can work a regular club or college, he said, and spends his time going “club-to-college-to-club.” But being mature for a college audience has become tricky for the 35-year-old. “As I’ve gotten older, obviously they’ve stayed the same age.” He hopes he’s not losing his touch.

He’s not into all that Twitter and Facebook the kids like these days, Byrne said. “I’d rather read a book, and not deal with any of that.” So what was life like in early ’90s, granddad? “I was at the library doing research for school (Kent State University). Now you just pop on the Internet and everything’s there for you. At 19, I was in college, playing hockey, having a lot of fun.” Byrne then laughed at some personal secret. “I had a lot of fun in college, let’s put it that way. I was definitely not the best student in the world.” So he put his goof-off attitude behind a microphone.

After a decade-and-a-half, Byrne is becoming a familiar face (he’s seen with Vince Vaughn recently in “Four Christmases” and “Couples Retreat”). Opening for Byrne at Western will be WMU student comedian Trevor Smith. As advice, Byrne would tell Smith to just “write and perform, and that’s really it.” Touring year after year “is like you’re getting a Ph.D. In (expletive) jokes.” Opening act Trevor Smith Trevor Smith: 21, WMU senior, journalism major, from Pinckney, north of Ann Arbor.
