May 15, 2015 Eight distinguished alumni honored for bringing pride to MSU The 12 th Annual Michigan State University College of Engineering Alumni Awards Banquet honored a teacher who inspires her junior high students to explore science and engineering, and a group of eight distinguished alumni whose accomplishments have brought pride to Michigan State University and the College of Engineering. The alumni were honored at MSU’s Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on May 9. Receiving the Claud R. Erickson Distinguished Alumni Award was Alton L. Granger of Dimondale, Mich., co-owner and chairman of the Granger Construction Company of Lansing. His many awards and distinctions include the MSU Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award (2004) and MSU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award (2006).

The Erickson Award is the highest honor conferred by the College of Engineering. First awarded to its namesake, Claud R. Erikson in 1982, the award is given to a graduate with at least 15 years’ professional experience who has attained the highest level of professional accomplishment; provided distinguished and meritorious service to the college and the engineering profession; and has engaged in voluntary service at the local, state, national and/or international level. Seven other alumni received departmental honors:. Maura Frances McDonald of Midland, Mich., an export compliance specialist for Dow Corning Corp. In Midland, received the Applied Engineering Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award. Scott of Seattle, Wash., dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Washington Bothell, received the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

Rogerson of Philadelphia, Pa., president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board of Chemtura Corp., received the Red Cedar Circle Award in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. Penny Wirsing of Redondo Beach, Calif., environmental manager for ExxonMobil Corporation’s Torrance Refinery in Southern California, received the Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

Orange of East Lansing, a seventh grade science teacher at MacDonald Middle School in East Lansing. This award was established in 2006 to honor K-12 teachers who are inspiring students to study math, science, and engineering.

The award is selected from nominations submitted by members of the College of Engineering. Drew Kim, assistant to the dean for recruitment and K-12 outreach, submitted her nomination. Orange has served since 2013 as a research assistant in MSU’s Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program.
